"We've never been very spendy people. I think neither of us has ever derived much pleasure from the simple act of spending," he says. "Without having a goal, at least for us, we felt rudderless... We felt like we were saving a bunch of money but what were we going to do with it?" He and his wife plan to live off their savings until they retire in 2017.
