What Is Dignity?

The idea that human beings have value simply because they are human beings is a new one. Leona helmsley needed to demonstrate her power by not acting like a dignitary, but by stripping dignity away from the people around her. Dignity was invented about the same time we invented the modern economy. What does it mean to give some one else dignity? To turn on a light to give them at least a modicum of respect.
