Aquinas' Theology of Evil
In Aquinas' view, God does not directly cause evil. He causes several different kinds of good creatures and he gives them the power to perform actions that promote their own good. It is these good creatures which God creates that cause each other to suffer losses of goodness. One creature's survival can entail the destruction of another creature. In order to have a universe with many different types of creatures, there has to be some suffering.
