Mendelssohn's Theme of the Slow Movement
Mendelsohn has set up a dramatic narrative with the all minor first movement and the all major second movement. He begins to do this in the slow movement by introducing a contrasting theme that interrupts as the warm song, without words, recedesthis theme has often been compared to a funeral march,. Some enthusiastic commentators have said that it represents the funeral march of mary, queen of scots.
