The Importance of Monarchy in India
If monarchy is strong, as jolin says, then it should not be so brittle that it can't withstand that debate. I've always respected the queen but this week has strengthened my view that having a monarchy is the right thing for this country. Not one of those things would be solved if we were to become a republic. Yes, monarchy is an anachronism, and yet you wouldn't design it from scratch to day. But it's our anachronist, and it works. And it's not the monarch that declares war or raises taxes or makes laws. Our parliament and our government do that.
