The origins of North American fire departments are a mystery to Dave. They weren't public municipal operations they were private businesses for profit at the time. The richer the neighborhood the higher the cost and then there were always rumors that they would start fires to be able to get paid to put them out. So they really weren't the brave men and women of fire stations we know today.
