The Importance of Imagination in Fiction

I think people misunderstand fiction very much now because so much of what's published now is in some sense, autobiography or memoir. I had this weird superstition when I started writing fiction that if I didn't stick very close to the cause and effectiveness of what happened in the book, that it wouldn't be real,. And I guess I never really went very far from that in a way. A lot of the characters in the book are composites. But initially they were all based on paintings. This friend of mine, Billy Sullivan, he had painted a lot of pictures of people that we knew, and some of them were people I didn't know also, but he wanted me to write stories
