There are other concerns about this project that go beyond it being a potential white elephant. The mangroves, fema mentions, are another important part of the lamu marine environment. These trees are vital habitats for sea creatures and birds, and crucially, valuable carbon sinks. So could they too be at threat from the huge cargo ships soon to be moving in and out of this region?
