Is Reading to Children Really Important?

In the 1960s, there was something called the International Teaching Alphabet where they actually added symbols. In some ways, English is difficult to learn, but it balances in terms of its ease of comprehension with these meaningful cues. Reading to children doesn't teach them to read,. But as I said, it exposes them to language that they might not be getting outside in the world. For those of us with young children, what are some simple things you would recommend that we do at home?
