The disaster at Ankara inaugurated an 11-year period known to scholars as the Ottoman Interregnum. The genius and the curse of the Ottoman system was its approach to succession. When the ruler died, none of the surviving sons had a preferential claim to being the next ruler. This could easily have been the end of the Ottoman Empire.
