The Quest for Neutrino

In the 1960s, Ray Davis set up a detector to detect neutrinos. He used 400,000 liters of cleaning fluid in an attempt to shield his experiment from cosmic rays. The idea originated with Bruno Ponticovo, who ruined his scientific career by disappearing to the Soviet Union during the 1950s. And every month or so, you purge out the tank and hope to find one or two atoms of argon to prove that you've done it.
