I wrote a 520 page dissertation on domestic politics 1950 to 1980 in light of the Cold War. The title is something like the anti-Maddalyn majority named for Madeleine-Mourey O'Hare, secular left religious right and the rise of Reagan's America. I think the realignment of social conservatives into the Republican Party had many, many factors that drove it. And there's a whole bunch of structural and personal racism in America that needs to be confronted.
