The Importance of Borsch in Ukraine
Borsch was such an intimate part of my own history as a Russian speaking person who grew up in Moscow. I felt embarrassed for thinking in Russian, for the volumes of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy on my shelf. The way we talk about food is often a proxy for talking about larger conflicts. These conflicts are real and they won't necessarily resolve when people share a dish.
