There's enough resolution in the 1x image that a lot of times what I found is even if I was expecting to sort of zoom in on a particular part of the region, I just took a 1x picture and then jumped into one of the zoomed images. And often found that the crop was actually better because it meant that I had the flexibility after the fact to adjust the crop exactly how I wanted. Sometimes the better picture came out of the 3x, but I liked having kind of the safety blanket of having the big 48 megapixel image for later use.
