The Last Post, a Cavalry Last Post
Last posts are created by the living for living, in the knowledge that our time is inevitably limited. I have this terrible feeling that wars of equal futility will be fought in the future. So they'll probably be able to relate to it quite well. For most human history, memorials were built to commemorate great military victories and the emperors and kings who achieved them. But the astounding losses of the first world war somehow democratized death, and there came a sense that everyone mattered. Maybe the real reason we carve the names of the dead in stone is that we hope some one will do the same for us.
