The Great Women Artists

00:00

The Renaissance in Italy

The renaissance is considered to have begun in the mid 13 hundreds, a good century or two before any detailed record of women artists emerges. The year 15 50 was when florentine art historian giorgio vassari published the lives of the artists - the first text of its kind to explore artists biographies. It is also when the term renaissance is coined, translating as rebirth and revival. In central and northern italy, artists and scholars rediscovered the ancient past and turned to the study of classical antiquity and literature.
