If you're going to get into small business, it's the riskiest asset class that exists. Even enduringly profitable businesses with 30 year track records could be out of business within a year if certain things beyond the control of the owner were to happen. To put your money into something and not take the time to truly investigate that other person is just another even higher order of stress or risk that you're taking.
