How to Cool a Radio Telescope
The first radio telescope was built in the 1960s. In July of that year, scientists turned it on to see if they could detect light waves from other galaxies. They saw a giant hiss and couldn't get rid of it. The team took apart all their electronics and replaced them with another layer of shielding. But this made only a very small amount of difference - reducing the noise by a little bit.
