There were no mountains in ancient Sumer, which is basically an alluvial plane. The idea was that it was a portal that was supposed to represent the mountains. It's not just symbolism for sure. There was something about that area. And we agree with David Roll, who actually proposed this first, that the temp tower of Babel was located at Ered.
