The Enlightenment and the Universalist Point of View

The system of law was changed so that the civil law would no longer punish what was considered to be sins, but only crimes. So in a sense that's probably the legacy of Renaissance humanism. Montesquieu wrote the spirit of laws, which was a huge compendium of knowledge about the laws of all countries. The idea being that each country may have laws that fit best its profile and its conditions.
