There was an uptick in racial violence throughout the country during the war. Roosevelt had issued a directive that African Americans, there was to be no discrimination in federal employment and African Americans were eligible for war work. The most celebrated incident is the blinding of Isaac Woodard, who was beaten by police in the south after he returned home.
