The Biggest Bacteria of the Year

This year's Breakthrough of the Year was a giant bacterium discovered in a mangrove swamp. Scientists are thinking that this might be kind of a microbial missing link that they could study to learn something about how eukaryotes first evolved. Greg Miller: This thing is kind of crazy. These are these long, thread-like cells that can be up to two centimeters long, almost an inch and you can see them with the naked eye.
