The So-Called Dutch Disease
The netherlands discovered natural gas in the late 19 fifties. It massively dominated their entire economy, and it strengthened their currency. That meant that if you weren't working in the oil industry, you kind of had a really expensive currency which made your exports look really expensive. And it kind of squeezed all those other industries and actually hurt the economy as a result. Yet a really interesting phenomenon. Which is why weve brought this up, there's this the that the us. Dollar being the reserve currency makes it ind of much stronger than the us. Economy in fact, deserves.
