The Origins of the South and the Slave Holding South
The South and the slave holding South are two different cultures, really. And this one is the area around the Chesapeake. It's much of lowland Virginia, but not the mountains, which becomes greater Appalachia. In the colonial period in the early republic, this was by far the most powerful region of all. Now it's a region that is disappearing and disintegrating because of the presence of the federal government.
