The Three Most Basic Powers of the Soul

The word for soul in latin is anima, and it's the soul which animates. So we would say like, plants have souls, animals have souls, and human beings have souls. Now, other living things also have a soul, because a soul is what makes us, or what makes a thing, to be alive. The lower form we call a vegtative soul, and then a sensory soul,. and then a rational soul. Those three powers of the soul are generation, growth and nourishment.
