Most of my soffer engineer experience is actually building and maintaining free coat camp itself. I spent like a year working as a proper developer on like a team doing ruby on rails development, practasing agile,. And that was invaluable. The real learning happens once you get on a team and you're actively contributing to a large, legacy code base which has a lot of people creating stuff. You understand the person who coded that component, because you are that person, you know. i think the closest approximation to working on a team on a big legacy coat base is contributing to open source early in ogt.
