The Importance of Progression in a Side Quest Story
You want everything in your book to either evoke character plot or setting, preferably all three. You've got to remember you can't let your reader feel that you are not progressing because of the side quest. The Hobbit uses side quests as tri-fail cycles. We get to see them try and fail over and over before they finally get to the big boss at the end. That's a case where you can see it especially in quest stories and travel stories like the Hobbit.
