How to Be a Successful Graduate Student

I knew from the time I was for that I wanted to be a chemist, but lots of good things have kept pointing me in this direction. Even then, when I was thinking about what I wanted to do after graduate school, I really loved TAing and I really loved mentoring undergraduates. But my PhD advisor had really strong opinions about the fact that he thought that I could hack it at a top tier school. And so I did a very unusual thing: I actually applied for faculty jobs when I was still a fourth year graduate student.
