What's the Microscope Problem?
CNN's John Sutter has been using a self-report questionnaire to measure responsibility in 30 countries. He found that cultures that are supposed to be collectivistic do show up as collectivistic on his responsibleism scale. And the ones that're supposed to be individualistic, they score really low on this scale. It also picks up reliably on liberal conservative differences and argues that liberals are the sort of individualistic ones in the United States; conservatives are the more collectivistic ones.
