It must have felt like the end of the world. The scientific descriptions of how these people would have died is incredibly grim. We're still at use of dispute to how many people lived in Pompeii at this time. It's very, very difficult to say who got away and who didn't. But I think there is good evidence that the people did manage to use in the earliest stage of the eruption elude the worst that was to come. So you've had a whole sort of situation of various things happening at once and obviously causing confusion and panic.
