The Role of Pulmonary Vascular Resistance in the Development of Heart Failure

When babies are first born, the pulmonary vascular resistance is equivalent to or even slightly above the systemic vascular resistance. So when you think about a VSD, how much flow is going to go from the left ventricle to the right ventricle? That difference is going to be driven by how high the pulmonary vascular Resistance is. And so that's why typically these babies are just fine from a squeezing standpoint, but they tend to breathe quickly and eventually fall off their growth curve.
