The Berlin Wall and the Cold War
After World War II, there were four Allied powers in control of Germany. The Soviet Union used its influence to keep their sector separate so it became a second nation known as East Germany. Even the capital, Berlin, remained divided, and the Soviets built a wall through it which separated West Berlin from East Berlin. This was the era that I was born in, so I had grown up my whole life without there being a unified Germany. It was always West Germany and East Germany, and all of the associated Cold War tension.
