Are You Conscious?

The more we know about the processes that lead to consciousness in humans, the more clues that will give us about where else it might be. So if we can figure out the mechanisms that give rise to and shape conscious experience in human adults or non-infants, then we can use that as a sort of benchmark to make inferences about where and when we are likely to find consciousness in the rest of the world.
