What's the Phrase to Look Down on Someone?

The pair were talking about standing and sitting in a group of friends. When they stood, it made them feel more self conscious than when they sat. They used the phrase "clam up" to refer to how you look down on someone who is lower than you socially. It's not clear what clam up means but climbing up sounds good.
