Between 1890 and 1917, at least 26,000 American miners were killed on the job. 12,000 miners were maimed every year, often permanently disabled. Mine collapses were very common. It's one of the most dangerous jobs people ever had to the extent that more Americans died from Cole collapses over the decades than died fighting in Vietnam.
