Proofs and Their Uses
Thomas Aquinas argues that the existence of god can be proven. He offers four ways to prove this, starting with some known effect and reasoning back to a primary cause. But in his fourth way he proves the existence of a highest paradime - something most true, beautiful and good. This is what we might call a first, formal or exemplar cause. And all of these first three ways could be said to reach back to god as a primal agent.
