The End of Empires
Premodern empires were more rent-seeking and extractive rather than facilitating trade. This changed during the 19th century when modern empires emphasized trade, facilitation and cross-border investment. Would things have turned out the same way without that anti-colonial struggle would the empires have fallen anyway? Absolutely. Just as industrialization diffuses, so does also the knowledge and institutions of modern statecraft.
