The Student Anxiety Epidemic
There are three main explanations for the increase in student anxiety. The first is that technology has made students less able to focus on education and knowledge. A second explanation says mental distress should be treated with behavioural modifications, psychiatric therapy or pharmaceutical correction. But each of those explanations neglects sociological and political economic factors that lead to the student anxiety epidemic. And all of which are expressed in the phenomenon of financialization of the university. Yes technologies have proliferated but students we find often turn to those technologies not only as instruments of pleasure or destruction but also as nodes of connection and indeed as solidarity and mutual support.
