The Risks of International Bailouts
A typical rescue loan from the IMF carries a 2% interest rate. The average interest rate attached to a Chinese rescue loan is 5%. Beijing does not offer bailouts to all Belt and Road borrowers in distress. Big recipients of Belt and Road Initiative financing who represent a significant balance sheet risk for Chinese banks are more likely to receive emergency aid.
