Tobacco was a big part of Lewis and Tolkien's life. We can see that in Lord of the Rings. Almost every major character. The only time I can find that it goes into Gandalf's mind, he can't decide which of the three doors are the right one to get out of the minds of Moria. He says, I need to sit down and have a smoke to clear my mind to figure out which is the right door. And I think this was written by a nicotine addict.
