Five billion people worldwide have two non functional versions of the gen, a c t n three. This non functional gen is more common in colder climates like central and northern europe than in africa. To find out why, researches recruited a group of volunteers with and without the function gean to immerse these participants in cold water. The scientists found that more of the volunteers with the non functioning gen could maintain a higher body temperature than those with the functional variant.
