Waverly Hills Sanatorium
In 1883, Major Thomas H. Hayes purchased the land in Louisville, Kentucky that would become the location of Waverly Hills Sanatorium. By the early 1900s, tuberculosis had spread throughout Kentucky as it had across the United States. There was no treatment for this disease at the time and infected individuals with advanced cases had to be quarantined in hospitals where they could get rest and fresh air. Through taxes, Louisville was able to construct two hospitals.
