The Role of Music in Fighting Racist Stereotypes
Professor Zhang: Music is something that even people who feel like they don't understand the words can appreciate the sound. Recently, I have been working on how fairytales or children's books translate Chinese tales and then reinforcing racist stereotypes. For example, one picture book is the Five Chinese Brothers, which was published in 1938. It has been promoted by American Education Association as one of the top 100 books for children. But I'm trying to argue that this is not an issue of illustration through picture book. There's a twist in translation. And through this twist of translation, we find that different ideological agenda, racist stereotype are filtered in. That is actually against the fundamental nature or formula of tales
