CHAPTER

The Biomaterials for Bone Formation

We take two things from the patient. One we take an image, a CT scan, which is like a three dimensional x-ray. So we can design a perfect puzzle piece shaped biomaterial that will be the eventual shape of the bone. We also take a small sample of that tissue from the patient and extract the stem cells out of it. Those cells can attach to the scaffold proliferate, lay down new matrix and essentially turn that biomaterial into living bone. It takes about three weeks for bone.
