The Disparity Between the Different Types of Peoples
In pre-World War II Australia immigrants from southern Italy, Dalmatia, Macedonia, Greek countryside were typically illiterate and spoke primarily their local dialects rather than the official languages of their respective home countries. In school their children tended to lag behind the children of their either native born Americans or the children of immigrants from northern and western Europe. Northern Europeans in Australia remained underrepresented in professional and technical occupations as late as the 1970s.
