The Catholic has a problem relating the actual world to all these images that he's been brought up on. Thomas Mann falls into the abyss of the archetypes in the magic mountain and then comes back. These are two different problems. What Joyce has done has been to start with these behind him, with the world out there, and carry them back chains of associations all along the place.
