We think our moon is unusual because it doesn't fall into either of these categories. We have done some flybys and so we have ideas for what these moons are probably made out of. And in the early solar system like you said things were like they were probably like rock giant rocks flying all over the place. It wouldn't be that weird for some of them to fall into orbit around a passing Jupiter or Saturn.
