A bond is simply an i oe you that an investor loans a company or government money, and the investor is promised to get their money back at some future date. In the us, the most common time period to do so is 30 years. The charge, or the cost of that bond is called the interest rate. And that is just the percentage that the borrower has to pay above and beyond the value of the bond in order to access that money.
