The Ambivalence of Tobacco

Tobacco became so valuable in the 13 colonies that it was sometimes used as currency. The Spaniards maintained a monopoly on tobacco since it was grown and exported to Europe from their American colonies, such as Cuba. Other European powers attempted to break the monopoly by creating their own tobacco plantations in their own American colonies. As I mentioned earlier, the soaring demand in Europe created large fortunes in Virginia, also Maryland and the Carolinas where tobacco grew best.
