In chinese culture, to give some one a gift of a watch is really bad form. It suggests that time is running out for them. We seem to invest these objects with great meaning as if theyere something more than just machines to count the hours. Ino ther different parts of the world, there are different types of collecting. The fashions change from time to time and place to place but everywhere there seems to be a feeling that a watch says something about you. They're sold not as tools, but as objects of desire and objects of great beauty and great value that will stand the test of time.
